What Does Bookkeeping Involve?
A merchant registered in a Trade & Companies Register (RCS) and benefiting from a standard taxation regime, must keep books which are regular, sincere, accurate and in accordance with the reality of his company. It can be produced on paper or electronically.
Keeping track of all accounting documents like purchase or sales invoices, receipts, payment slips, expense reports and so on according to the accounting standards framework.
It involves tracking all financial flows of a business, enabling entrepreneurs to:
- Justify the use of company funds and validate accounting operations;
- Issue invoices;
- Archive accounting records and supporting documents for at least 10 years;
- Monitor the existence and value of the company’s assets and liabilities;
- Prepare annual financial statements at the end of each fiscal year, including: a balance sheet (overview of the company’s assets and liabilities), an income statement (detailing revenues and expenses to show profit or loss) and notes to the financial statements (explaining the accounting methods used).
- Fulfill legal tax obligations (VAT filings, profit declarations, income tax submissions).
